WANT TO BE A LAS VEGAS POKER DEALER?

One of the most oft repeated inquiries about Las Vegas casino employment is, "How can I become a Poker dealer?"
With the rise in Poker's popularity, there has been an increased need for dealers, but there's plenty of competition for this high paying job.
There are Poker schools galore in Las Vegas, and attendance at one of them is pretty much a necessity, unless you have actual casino experience, and are a good dealer.
Even if you have experience as a Poker dealer in a non-Las Vegas casino, don't expect to start at a glamorous Strip casino; those jobs are the cream of the crop and only go to the best, most experienced dealers.
For starters you'll have to work at a small, off Strip casino, a hole in the wall, so to speak, in order to earn your stripes, and at that, you'll have to audition for the job, that is show what you can do in a mock game with casino managers as players.
If they like your style, and feel you can handle their particular clientele, you may get an offer for some of the worst days and hours of the week, meaning the times when traffic is lowest.
That's right, the busier shifts go to the more experienced dealers with seniority, because obviously, the more players there are, the more you make in tips.
After serving an "Apprenticeship
" you will then be ready to move up through the ranks and get a better slot at a larger local's casino. Many dealers prefer to stay at this type of place for a variety of reasons, and if you develop a fair number of regular gamblers you can make a pretty good living, without the higher stress and demands of the mega-resorts.
By the way, you'll have to audition for every job you apply for.
If you do get your foot in the door, and are able to make a career out of it, you can make a good living as a Poker dealer. It's possible to earn well over $100K, most of it coming from tips.
Things are changing however, and a move by casino mogul Steve Wynn to have dealers share tips with management is currently a hot topic in Las Vegas.
Personally I think the idea sucks for a lot of reasons. Managers aren't supposed to get tipped, period, and, when I leave a tip I like to know it's going to the guy or gal that I want to reward. I don't my tip shared with some unknown yo-yo I might not like.
Here's the story I posted on this when it first made news.
And here's the latest on this cheapskate Wynn's bright idea.
