JACKASSES IN LAS VEGAS

Well, although Las Vegas does not want for jackasses, mostly of the resident variety, the critters you see in this video are actually wild burros.

These usually elusive critters, when they decide to make a public appearance, cause quite a ruckus among people who are eager, as was I, to get photos and videos.

This is an older video that I took when I first got the camcorder so it's not great, but it does afford you an opportunity to see the remnants of a bygone era, and perhaps some of the last of what remains of wild America.

These animals are descendents of the burros used by silver and I guess, gold miners, dating back to a time prior to the glory days of the Comstock Lode.

That means that their ancestry can be traced back well over 150 years. It's amazing that they still survive in the wild, although a severe shortage of natural food, and encroaching housing developments are threatening their continued survival.

This pair was just outside of the "Red Rock National Preserve", which is 15 minutes from my house and a very popular place for gamblers to visit for a bit of a break from the casinos.

As I always say, you can find anything in Las Vegas.
