Slot machines are the most popular form of gambling in Las Vegas.

Despite the fact that slot machines offer the worst odds of any casino game, people just love them, and new ones are introduced constantly.

Slot machines are a huge topic of conversation here in Las Vegas. Fans of slots all have their own theories and ideas as to which machines pay the most, what casino has the "loosest" slots, how to tell when a given machine is about to "hit," and so forth.

Theories as to how to best play a slot machine range from how fast or slow to pull the handle, on the few remaining machines that still have one, to whether a player should sit or stand.

My mother-in-law, Fedora, shown above, picks out a machine based on how comfortable the seat is, and whether or not the temperature in that area is to her liking. Then she simply puts her money in, slaps the bet button, and utters a quick prayer to Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost causes.

That's her system, and sometimes it works; she's won her share of sizable jackpots over the years.
