The college football season is over, and as in most years, I'm in disagreement with the final rankings, especially the two top spots.
In a recent poll the residents of all but two states, Ohio and Louisiana, big surprise, felt that Ohio State and LSU were not the teams that belong in the National Championship game.
Now I'm sure that a lot of this sentiment is the result of people, for example, in Oklahoma or California or Hawaii or Virginia or Georgia, who feel that their teams belong in the title game.
But of course there are also diehards who think that 6-6 Alabama should be in the BCS Championship game.
As usual I feel that we need a playoff system so the best teams all have a shot at the title, just as in all other collegiate and professional sports. We don't have a playoff system because it's all about money and the existing bowl games. It should be about the athletes who should have their shot at being National Champions.
The way it is now just isn't reflective of the strength of the teams at the end of the regular season. USC's two losses occurred when their quarterback was out with an injury. He returned and they ran the table.
Ohio State's schedule was one of the weakest this season, and they still managed to lose a game, and came in first.
For my money I think USC and Oklahoma should be 1 and 2.
Anyway, the college bowl season starts a week from tonight and except for a few of them most of the games should be highly competitive.
I'm going to speculate on the first bunch of games, for fun, and we'll see how I do.
Dec. 20 Poinsettia Bowl, Utah vs. Navy
