OK, week 1 of the college football season is in the books, and although there weren't any huge upsets there were some mild ones of note.
As I suspected, UCLA is a better team than many thought, and their victory over #18 Tennessee certainly provided an auspicious start to Coach Rick Neuheisel career at UCLA.
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that they won the game with their third string quarterback. How many coaches would like to have a guy like that in reserve?
I went 4 and 2 last week. I took a chance on Syracuse and it didn't work out; but I made a really dumb choice with Rutgers.
Considering their good performances the past 2 seasons I thought that perhaps the team would build on that. I had a feeling that Fresno State was going to be comer this year, but being a Jersey boy, and having almost attended Rutgers, I chose with heart and hope rather than head.
Now we have to wait and see if Rutgers simply lost to a very good team or if they're back in the toilet.
Lesson learned: Never choose based on loyalty or emotion or whatever; go with the team you really feel is better and of course consider the point spread.
This week I'll try:
Boston College, at home, minus 7, over Georgia Tech
Auburn, at home, minus 17, over Southern Mississippi
BYU, away, minus 10, over Washington
Buffalo, away, plus 13, over Pittsburg
Connecticut, away, minus 7, over Temple
Miami (FL), away, plus 22, over Florida

Have fun and good luck!
